He and Val have a very strange relationship dynamic. When they first meet, they absolutely can't stand each other. She thinks he's dull and inferior, and he thinks she's bratty and snobbish. However, as he and his friends are the first "Earth dwellers" she's had the chance to really get to know, they become closer friends as she unwinds. By the time the action starts, they're in a reluctant romantic situation. I swear it makes more sense in my head XD
